Follow the Greifenburg Water Trail through the stunning Gnoppnitzklamm gorge. The whole family will love this shady path, with plenty of stops for swimming in clear pools – water so clear in fact that you can drink it. Even quite young children will be tempted to walk on and on, from adventure station to activity, and from pool to pool. The roaring waters of the Gnoppnitzbach river create a relaxing backdrop to your walk. The trail leads directly from the town centre of Greifenburg and takes about an hour.
The Sablatnigmoor nature conservation area near the town of Eberndorf covers 100 hectares of protected ecosystems, where visitors can walk among varied landscapes and see many different birds, amphibians, insects and plants. Another highlight is Lake Gosseldorfer where you can swim and relax in summer. Take a guided tour of the Sablatnigmoor to immerse yourself in the beauty of this rich marshland habitat.
Follow the Bacherlebnisweg adventure trail along the Lieser River, while it is still a mountain stream, and into the Pöllatal nature reserve. This charming family nature hike is around six kilometres and mostly flat. There are 11 information boards along the way, encouraging hikers of all ages to look, listen and understand. For the kids, each board has a special quiz or game to complete. At the end of the day, stop at the cosy Kochlöffelhütte for a hot chocolate and cake. You might even want to try some fishing on the way.
The Wildenstein waterfall is the highest free-falling cascade in the whole of Europe! A torrent of stunning, sparkling water plunges 54 metres into the pool below. The Wildenstein Waterfall Trail takes around an hour on a well-formed path through the forested canyon. Pick wild raspberries and strawberries from beside the path in late summer and enjoy views of Hochobir mountain and the wildflower-filled meadows around Gallizien on your way back down.
Near the market town of Steinfeld in the Upper Drau Valley, this Naturparcours/Outdoor Park has fun activities for the whole family. It is in the area of the Hohe Tauern National Park and the views are fantastic. For the best nature holiday, try the Rottenstein farm trail through meadow and woodland. Or the shorter Bee Trail with experience stations to learn about these important creatures. A unique outdoor experience is 3D archery, where participants roam through forest terrain shooting at foam 3D ‘prey’. Field archery is a great way of building concentration and enjoying the outdoors at the same time.
