Carinthia, the sunny south of Austria, has made a reputable name for itself in recent years with what it can offer cyclists of all kinds, whether leisure, trekking, or mountain biking. A lot of sunshine, a mild climate, a long season, Europe’s warmest bathing lakes and the tasty Carinthian cuisine all play their part in the popularity of the region.
The highlight for all leisure cyclists is the Carinthian Lake Loop. As a horizontal figure eight, the multi-day tour meanders along the Carinthian lakes with stupendous views and sights. In 2023, the tour was extended with a route in Central Carinthia with trip destinations surrounding vineyards and castles.
In total, more than 400 kilometres of enjoyable cycling and 20 lakes await cyclists on the Carinthian Lake Loop.
50 percent of this route is by the water, either along many well-known Carinthian lakes or along the embankments of the Gail or Drau rivers with plenty of opportunities to take a dip. The Carinthian Lake Loop is divided into eight stages. Those who would like to get to know the diversity of Carinthia should take at least four days, better still a week, to explore. The western or eastern circuits of this horizontal figure eight are suitable for shorter discovery tours.
