Cycling with a view of the lake and surrounding mountains
On the sunny side of the Alps amidst the breathtaking setting of the Carnic and Gailtal Alps lies the Nassfeld/Pressegger See/Weissensee region as part of the World of Mountains and Lakes. Newly created BIKEworld opens the door to infinite possibilities for bikers. An unobstructed view of the shimmering lakes in particular is a constant companion on many routes, promising a glorious end to the tour. In the Gailtal, Lake Pressegg which is surrounded by the second largest reed belt in Austria invites you to set off and explore. Thanks to its sunny location, the lake warms up early in the day and is extremely popular with swimmers. The well-developed Gailtal Cycle Path, which runs along the Gail river for long stretches, also provides ample opportunities for a refreshing dip.
Lake Weissensee radiates tranquillity. At 930 m above sea level, it is the highest and also cleanest bathing lake in the Alps. Located in a 76 m² nature park, you dive into untouched nature here.
The beginning and end of this stage of the Carinthian Lake Loop around Lake Pressegg is the lido. From here you cycle along the natural reed belt towards Hermagor. In Möderndorf you cross the bridge over the Gail and from then on it’s downstream along the banks of the river with numerous spots to take a break. Whether you simply dip your toes into the cool water or take the full plunge, you are guaranteed to feel refreshed. In Görtschach you change banks and return to Lake Pressegg. With a water temperature of up to 28 degrees, this is the ideal place to end the day in style.
On the stage of the Carinthian Lake Loop by Lake Weissensee you begin by cycling from the south side of the bridge in Techendorf along an asphalt road towards the east. The first part leads right along the lake with an easily manageable climb to the village of Naggl. Here a forest path leads to the jetty, from where you can take a boat to Ronacherfels on the north side of the lake. The boats run about every hour in high season. Once there, you can leisurely cycle back west. Turquoise water, secluded bays, white sand – an array of natural beauties await you here. The last section then leads through the village of Neusach and back to Techendorf.
