Regional cycle tours

162 kilometres of cycling pleasure between culture and history is promised by the various routes of the Via Carinzia in the sunny corner of Carinthia. Starting in the Rosental Valley, which is characterised by the Karawanken mountain range, you can cycle in five daily stages to Lake Klopeiner See and further to the gentle hills of the Lavant Valley. On the way, many interesting sights – such as the Benedictine Monastery of St. Paul – are perfect resting points. 

Anyone who wants to connect a visit to the Werner Berg Museum with a cycle tour through the southern Jaun Valley should try the Kunstradweg or Art Cycle Path in Bleiburg. In addition to the Werner Berg Museum, old churches, cultural monuments or the Liaunig Museum in Neuhaus add value to the cycle tour.

If you enjoy both sport and the countryside and would also like to enjoy the cultural wealth of Carinthia, the cycle paths passing cultural sights are the perfect opportunity to combine your interests. 11 churches, 7 castle ruins and castles, as well as a vineyard border the Kulturradweg or Cultural Cycle Path in Völkermarkt. The burial grounds from the Hallstatt period at Lamprechtskogel and the burial mounds of Noric kings in Waisenberg are also historical evidence of a thousand-year-old culture.

The central Carinthian Kulturradweg or Cultural Cycle Path between Klagenfurt and Dürnstein is a section of the transregional R7 cycle path. The starting point of the tour is the provincial capital, Klagenfurt. Towards the north, you get to Magdalensberg, where the former Noric “town” can be viewed in an archaeological park. The Kulturradweg leads further to St. Veit. To the east, Hochosterwitz Castle, which is one of the most beautiful castles in Europe set on a rocky hill with 14 fortified gates, is reached. The route leads further to the old “town of castles”, Friesach, and shortly after crossing the border into Styria the Kulturradweg ends at the castle ruins of Dürnstein. Many signposted eBike routes make cycling in Central Carinthia a true pleasure. 

Fit cyclists could manage the 28 kilometre long Lake Millstätter See Cycle Path in two hours – and would miss all the good things about a lakeside cycle path. Numerous bays tempt you to stop and splash or swim or you can experience the moor water of Lake Egelsee. Tip: Boat shuttle. 

A magnificent backdrop in the midst of the Gailtal and Carnic Alps is offered to all cycle fans on the Gailtalradweg, which leads from Kötschach-Mauthen to Villach on well-laid out cycle paths with a total length of 95 kilometres. Don’t miss a refreshing dip in Lake Pressegger See, which glitters in the sun directly next to the path.

In the north of the province, in the Hohe Tauern National Park region, you will find the Glocknerradweg. This day tour leads through alpine valleys, which are surrounded by imposing summits of over 3,000 metres, and many natural spectacles; for example, the Jungfernsprung waterfall, which falls freely for many hundreds of metres over a rock face to the valley.

The approx. 50 kilometre Fünf-Seen-Tour or Five Lake Tour (Lake Wörthersee and Keutschach valley of lakes) begins in Velden and leads along the shore of Lake Wörthersee through Pörtschach and Krumpendorf to Klagenfurt. From Viktring the cycle path leads gently up for a few kilometres to the Keutschach valley of lakes. Through the Schiefling moor it leads to Schiefling, with the last uphill section. Then it is downhill all the way back to Velden.

The 6-Seen-Radtour or 6 Lake Cycle Tour includes lakes Klopeiner See, Kleinsee, Turnersee, Gösselsdorfer See, Sonnegger See and Pirkdorfer See. On the approx. 54 kilometre long track there are numerous excursion destinations and inns to stop off at. 

Don’t forget your swimming things – six lakes with temperatures of up to 28°C await you.

Klagenfurt am Wörthersee offers cycling guests a unique combination of a modern city with southern joie de vivre and good shopping options and special culinary experiences in the cultural triangle of Italy, Slovenia and Carinthia. What’s more, Lake Wörthersee as the biggest swimming lake in Carinthia with water temperatures of up to 28°C in summer, and the gently hilly surroundings with numerous cycle paths, framed by the scenery of the Southern Alps. But Klagenfurt is also a magnet for athletic cyclists. One reason for this is the Ironman Austria that takes place in Klagenfurt and attracts more than 2,500 triathletes from all over the world to Lake Wörthersee every year. Starting in Klagenfurt, cyclists can reach all directions in no time on well-developed and signposted cycle paths, which include well-known routes such as the R1 Drauradweg – awarded 5 stars by the German Cyclists’ Federation, the R4 Wörthersee-Radweg or the R7 Glanradweg to the ducal town of St. Veit and the medieval town of castles, Friesach.
