Even Pope John Paul II. paid the impressive building a visit in the 1980s. Gurk Cathedral is the destination of the Hemma Pilgrimage Trail, which invites you to walk in the footsteps of the church and monastery founder on a route of around 800 kilometres starting in Slovenia. The tradition has existed since the beginning of the 17th century.
In summer active nature lovers and sports fans will find attractive hiking trails, cycle tracks, tennis courts, an open-air swimming pool and a shooting range in the municipality of Gurk. In winter extensive cross-country skiing trails through the snowy landscape await.
