The Urtl blast furnace for iron production in Guttaring is the oldest preserved smelting oven in Europe.
The precise date on which iron was first produced is not known, but it is assumed to have been towards the end of the first millennium. The construction of the blast furnace was commissioned in 1587.
Guttaring is also the setting of the legend of the “stone lentils”: several centuries ago a farmer did not want to abide by a religious festival and use the opportunity to go to church, and then when it was harvest time instead of lentils he found only small stones in his fields. Legend has it that his redemption can only take place once all the small stones have been collected ... Anyone who wants to help will find a wooden information board in the so-called “lentil field”.
