Maria Rain lies between the slopes of the Sattnitz massif and Carinthia’s main river, the Drau, which has been dammed here to form the Ferlach reservoir.
If you enjoy peace and unspoiled natural surroundings, you should hike along the Kaiserhüttenweg trail. The highlight and destination of the trail is the Kaiserhütte lodge, which was built in honour of Emperor Franz Joseph I. In 2009 the old wooden building was replaced with a new mountain lodge, which offers a breathtaking view of the Rosental Valley and the Karawanken.
Another popular destination in the municipality is the Valentinsfähre ferry. Departing from Glainach you can take a relaxed barge ride across the Drau to Maria Rain and enjoy the beauties of nature from the water. A natural monument of a very special kind is “the eternal rain”. The outlet of springs that never run dry has created small-sedge fens and mini waterfalls, which are used to supply the municipality with drinking water.
