St. Veit an der Glan, the capital of Carinthia until 1518, lies nestled in a region of castles, churches, museums and attractions.
This makes the former ducal town a perfect starting point for hikes and (E-)bike tours, with an E-Bike hire centre right in the town centre. There are also enthralling themed guided tours of the town, such as a lantern-lit town tour, water hikes, tours of castles and ruins, or the chance to go on a pilgrimage in the footsteps of Saint Hemma.
The St. Veit Museum is also well worth a visit, with its focus on railways, model railways, the history of the town, motorisation, post and telecoms. The museum also houses the world’s only travel simulator of a 4030 railcar.
But St. Veit is also famous for the St. Veiter Wiesenmarkt. This traditional market has been held annually in September for well over 600 years, and over time has developed into a fair. The trading, haggling and celebrations last for a full ten days, with the spectrum ranging from a pageant, 200 hucksters’ stalls and 40 food outlets, an amusement park and live music, to exhibitions and special shows (such as agriculture and commerce, automotive and motor sport, or small animals).
The people of St. Veit have already taken the renewable energy route, with the vision of being self-sufficient in energy by the year 2020. The “Energy Experience” exhibition in the town centre Fuchspalast presents interesting approaches to this.
An especially popular form of leisure enjoyment for both residents and guests is St. Veit’s indoor swimming pool with an outdoor pool and water slides, as well as a very attractive sauna landscape.
